October 18 Parent Letter

Parents,

Progress reports come out this week on Wednesday. Look for them in your child’s folder.

Third and fourth graders should start thinking about chapter books. If your child hasn’t read a chapter book yet this six weeks, now is the time!

Many thanks to all the parents who are helping to drive children to our field trip Wednesday.

Our Chapter 3 Social Studies test will be on Wednesday. Study sheets will be in the folders tomorrow. Science will be on Thursday as usual.

Regarding the Unit 2 Social Studies project: I’ve heard rumblings from some of the students that their computer doesn’t work, no printer, etc... and that they’re not doing it. This IS a required assignment and counts as a test grade. Students will have a ‘0’ averaged in if they do not complete the assignment. Please let me know if you have any questions.

Second Six Weeks Memory Verse #4

Blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord, whose confidence is in Him. Jeremiah 17:7

Lesson 10 Science Test

1. Everything around you is made of matter.

2. Matter on Earth has three basic forms (states.)

3. Matter CAN change from one form to another.

4. Crystals are small, well organized pieces of solids.

5. Energy is required for any change in matter.

6. EVAPORATION is not a form of matter.

7. Matter can change forms if you use energy.

8. When you mix a solid with a liquid, one possible result is a solution.

9. The water in this activity was removed by evaporation.

10. WIND BLOWING does not involve a change in matter.

October 11 Parent Letter

Parents,

This is the third week of the grading period. That means look for Progress Reports next week.

There is information on the Unit 2 Social Studies Project in the folder today. Please look for this.

October is Pastor Appreciation Month. We are going to present Pastor Ulmer with a gift card at chapel on Wednesday. If your child would like to contribute to this, please send that tomorrow. It would be nice if each child could chip in a dollar.

If you haven’t returned the permission slip for the Pumpkin Patch, please try to do so soon. Also notice that there is a note about the PTL meeting next week.

That’s about all this week. The students are doing great. Keep up the good work parents.

Second Six Weeks Memory Verse #3

God made Him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in Him we might become the righteousness of God. 2 Corinthians 5:21

Lesson 8 Science Test Review

  1. The brain is part of our nervous system.
  1. Muscles are controlled by the nervous system.
  1. Most tasks require the cooperation of different body parts.
  1. People of the same age may NOT have the same reaction time.
  1. Many things besides illegal drugs can impair a person’s reaction time.
  1. The inside-out popper lying on your work surface contained potential energy.
  1. When the popper “popped,” kinetic energy was released.
  1. Muscles are NOT part of your nervous system.
  1. The amount of time it takes for you to respond to a stimulus is called your reaction time.
  1. A depressant drug (like alcohol) will increase reaction time, causing them to react slower.

Unit 2 Social Studies Project

The Unit 2 Social Studies project will be for each student to make a poster.  We have drawn names and the students have picked the following Native American groups.

Tobin – Kiowa
Trey – Concho
Harley – Jumano
Mason – Caddo
Jessica – Comanche
Harlie – Cherokee
Noah – Lipan Apache
Ayla – Karankawa
Alan – Tonkawa

Posters should be on a regular sized poster board.  Students should research and make their posters at home.

Things to include on your posters:  maps of where the tribes were found, type of dwellings used, types of “jobs” they did (farming, hunting, etc.), foods they ate.   Be creative.  Share any interesting things discovered.  You may include pictures of artifacts, lodgings, etc.  Posters should have a main title which states which tribe it tells about.

Posters will be due on Thursday, November 4th.

September 27 Parent Letter

Parents,

Today is the first day of the second six weeks. Remember you have conferences scheduled for this week. I sent home the weeks schedule on Friday. If your schedule has changed, please let me know as soon as possible.

Students will bring home their new folders today. Second graders will notice that they have bonus spelling words this time. These are on a separate sheet behind the spelling words. These words will be worth 1 point each on their spelling tests, but will not count against them if they miss them.

Third grade parents: Seriously…please work with the math flash cards every day. The students need to be quicker with their facts, and I feel this is a high priority right now. Third grade will begin simple division this week. The students will soon see how important it is to know those facts!

Mrs. Tanya Denkeler will be coming to teach a writing lesson to the class on Thursday afternoon. She is a member of the school board, and is volunteering some time to the school.

Third and Fourth graders need to bring a shoebox with a lid for our art project this week. The students will be making a diorama.

I look forward to meeting with you this week.

Second Six Weeks Memory Verse #1

[God] has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son He loves. Colossians 1:13

Lesson 6 Science Test

1. Fruit is smaller when it’s dehydrated than when it’s fresh.

2. Fruit is lighter when it’s dehydrated than when it’s fresh.

3. When something is dehydrated, water leaves its cells.

4. Once water has left a cell, it can go back in again.

5. Dehydration slows decomposition.

6. Water returning to cells is NOT a result of dehydration.

7. The membrane is the name of the tough coating that surrounds a cell.

8. Dehydration slows down the process of decomposition.

9. Dehydrated food usually keeps much longer than fresh food.

10. Dehydrated food would be helpful 1) on a hike where weight is a concern, 2) in a place with no refrigeration, 3) in a climate where spoilage occurs rapidly.

September 20 Parent Letter

Parents,

This week, third graders will begin studying the 4 fact family. If you are practicing with flash cards at home, please add in the 4’s.

The students continue to work on a program on our classroom computer, Math Facts in a Flash. I want each student to get on at least once a week. This is a math facts program that times the student (2 minutes). In order to move to the next level, they must score 100% within the time goal. My goal is that no student in either grade need to count on their fingers! Students have been making good progress.

Remember to encourage you child to bring home a book to read each night. This is the last full week for them to gain points for the ice cream party. Third graders should have read one chapter book by the end of the six weeks.

This is the last week of the grading period for Reading and Spelling Tests. Let's work really hard to get great scores this week.

Remember the parade on Wednesday. Try to meet at 5:00 to help decorate the trailer, or 5:30 to load up and get in line.

Because this is the last week of the grading period, we will have Show and Tell on FRIDAY. Please remember that it is not ‘show and play’, so please don’t send toys. The students really look forward to this day.

My class is making quite the long line at the microwaves each day at lunch. Sometimes they have to wait so long that they don’t have much time to actually eat. If your child has things they like to eat that doesn’t need heating, please try to send a non-heated lunch a few days a week.

Third and Fourth Graders have their Chapter 1 Social Studies Test Tuesday.

First Six Weeks Memory Verse #5

Put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes you may be able to stand your ground. Ephesians 6:13

Lesson 5 Science Test

1. The shape of a leaf helps us identify the plant it came from.

2. Leaves are very important to most plants.

3. All the leaves on a tree are NOT exactly the same.

4. An image is a likeness or a picture of something.

5. A rubbing gives us a more detailed image of something.

6. Anchoring the plant to the soil is NOT a function of leaves.

7. The rubbing you made in this activity provided an image of the leaf.

8. A growing flower is NOT an image.

9. If you used very thick paper for the rubbing it would show less of the leaf’s detail.

10. The stem and veins of a leaf do not absorb water from the soil.

September 13 Parent Letter

WOW! How did it get to be Wednesday...Sorry it took me so long to post these. The kids did an awesome job last night - I'm so proud of them.

Parents,

Look for your child’s progress report in their folder today. Attached to it will be their reading record for the first three weeks of school. Please remember that when they are reading for their trophy, only books at or above their grade level are counted. Please sign and return the bottom portion of their progress report on Tuesday. I will replace the lowest non-test grade in one subject of your choice with a 100 if this is returned on Tuesday. Please write the subject next to your signature.

I will remind third and fourth grade parents again to buy some multiplication flash cards. Speed drill averages count as a test grade, and they must be able to work quickly. Please practice these every day.

Second grade parents – addition and subtraction flash cards will help the students get faster on their speed drills.

I will begin to take points off (-1) when the students write their numbers wrong, and am already taking points off (-5) when they leave their names off a paper. If your child has problems getting their numbers right, please practice with them at home.

We have standing water around the school after it rains. Mosquitoes are likely to be a big annoyance. Feel free to send insect repellant to school and I will hose down the kids before we go outside! Be sure to label with your child’s name.

Remember that tomorrow night, Tuesday, September 14 at 7:00 is our first PTL meeting. The children are performing one song and one song using the chimes. Please try to attend.

Lastly, tomorrow I will not be at school. It is a day that I need to take off my teacher hat and put on my pastor’s wife hat. Mrs. Jan Becker will be my substitute for the day. She enjoys being with the kids and they all know her. Please encourage them to be on their best behavior. I’ll be back on Wednesday, and will also be at the meeting that night.

First Six Weeks Memory Verse #4

[Jesus] Himself bore our sins in His body on the tree, so that we might die to sins and live for righteousness. 1 Peter 2:24

Lesson 4 Science Test

1. A creature that catches and eats other creatures is called a predator.

2. Grazing animals are usually prey.

3. Predators can sometimes become prey themselves.

4. Predators would ultimately be worse off if all the prey died.

5. Prey would ultimately be worse off if all the predators died.

6. A mouse is least likely to be considered a predator.

7. A lion is least likely to be considered prey.

8. Failure to catch enough prey could cause a predator to starve.

9. Your bugs had different numbers on their backs. This represents the fact that larger
bugs have more food value.

10. If a deer living in a certain are had almost no predators, the deer could eventually
starve due to overpopulation.

September 7 Parent Letter

Parents,

Flash cards, flash cards, flash cards! If you don’t already have them, third and fourth graders need them! Second grade began their speed drills today, and will continue to have these each day. Third grade has begun their 2 multiplication families and we will begin the 3 family this week. If you are practicing with flash cards, please practice on the 2’s and 3’s. Fourth graders are already doing some difficult multiplication and division is on top of us. They obviously will have lots of trouble with division if they don’t know their multiplication facts. I know there are some good apps you could download to their IPods. Practice, practice, practice on the multiplication facts!

If you haven’t sent back the Star Student page and the decorated star with a picture, please try to get that done this week.

We have saved our pictures for our power point project. Next up is finding information on our topics. If you’ve already looked up things with your child, they are welcome to think of 4-5 “bullet points” that we can type up next week. We will also work on this in class.

Continue checking the class web page. Science study sheets and memory work will be posted each week. Our weekly Science assessment will usually be on Thursday.

Two additional items...with the rain...most likely will come mosquitoes. Please send insect repellent marked with your child's name if you would like them to have it. Also, look for the note about the Bishop Homecoming Parade in your child's folder. We need those returned on Wednesday.

First Six Weeks Memory Verse #3

August 30 Parent Letter

Parents,

What a great first week of school we had. The second graders seem to be adjusting fairly well to the busier workday. Don't forget to call or stop by after school if you have questions or concerns. I seem to be adjusting to the changes in schedule and having three grades for part of the day. Things will continue to improve in the next few weeks while we iron out the wrinkles.

Obviously, it is blazing hot outside, and my classroom gets rather warm in the afternoon. Students are welcome to bring a water bottle to school if they would like water in class.

A few things to remember:

Check the class web page weekly: http://mrseckertsclassroom.blogspot.com/

Be sure and fill in the church and Sunday school page each weekend in the student's folder. If no response is given, attendance will be recorded as 'no.'

I am sending home Scholastic book orders today. If you order books for your child, please make checks out to Scholastic. If at all possible, checks are much easier for me than cash. This month's book orders are due on Friday, September 3. You may also order online. I will attach instructions on how to do that to the order forms. Online orders will also be due by Friday.

We have picked our topics for the Social Studies project and will begin working this week picking out pictures. Next will be printing out information and writing our “bullet points.”

One additional thing: In Monday's folder you will find a star for your child to decorate at home and return with a picture. Also please fill out the All About Me page.

Thanks again for a great first week!

First Six Weeks Memory Verse #2

God is our God for ever and ever, He will be our guide even to the end. Psalm 48:14

Lesson 2 Science Test

1. All snakes are NOT poisonous and deadly to people.

2. The poison some snakes produce is called venom.

3. A poisonous snake’s fangs work much like a syringe.

4. A poisonous snake grows more than one set of fangs in his life.

5. Some poisonous snakes can warn of their presence.

6. If all the snakes died, the rodent population would grow rapidly.

7. One reason some poisonous snakes have bright colors is to warn animals (and people)
to leave them alone.

8. The purpose of venom in snakes is: 1) to help snakes kill prey and 2) to help snakes
digest food.

9. Age and/or size is NOT a good way to tell a poisonous snake from a non-poisonous
snake.

10. Snakes are an important part of the environment.

First Day of School

August 23rd Parent Letter

Parents,

Welcome back to school! I am so happy to be teaching your child. I know that your child will have a successful year of school! There are some things to remember, which will help them to be successful and to learn many new things. Your child needs your help and support. Their work this year will be harder and will require new skills. Please make sure they have all their supplies each day, check that assignments are complete, and study with them before tests. Check their folders daily: homework, graded papers, notes from teacher or principal will be in the folders. The homework log requires a signature each day, even if no homework is assigned for that day. Classwork that has not been completed in class must be returned complete the next day, or no credit will be given.

I am always available to meet or talk with you. Feel free to call anytime. We are occasionally gone in the afternoon or evening, but leave a message, and I will return your call. If you call the school during the day, I’ll return your call at my first break. My number at home is 592-4095 – please do not hesitate to call with any questions or concerns. My school e-mail is: stpaulblue@gmail.com

I reviewed the classroom, hallway, and lunch room procedures and my discipline plan today. I have sent home today in their folder my classroom procedures and discipline plan. Please sign and return the back copy of the discipline plan.

I will send home our classroom schedule next week. I want to try it out before sending it home to make sure no adjustments need to be made.

I will send home a note each Monday alerting you to any extra assignments, tests, or things to return during that week. The student’s folder requires your attention daily. Please take out graded papers daily. In the student’s folder, you will find:

1) TREAT Sheet (needs signature)
2) Homework Log (sign each day!)
3) Church and Sunday School Attendance Sheet (If neither is circled, it will be counted
as ‘NO’)
4) Spelling List
5) Reading List (signature NOT required on this)
6) Writing Topic Assignments – (Coloring the picture is REQUIRED)
7) Religion Memory Verses (once a week – on Friday)

Nightly homework assignments are due the next day – not any time before Friday. They will lose a letter from their TREAT Sheet if their log is not signed AND if their homework is not turned in.

Our class web page will be much the same as last year. I will post my Monday class note each week as well as the week's memory verse. Web sites that may be of interest to you will also be posted, as well as any pictures of special activities. I will post any study sheets here as well. (One change this year is that I will also send paper copies of study sheets home.) It is important that you get in the habit of checking this weekly. This will be a good secondary resource in case letters or schedules are misplaced. I will also need to have an e-mail address – that you check regularly – so that when unexpected things come up I can send a class e-mail rather than a paper note.

Our web page is : http://mrseckertsclassroom.blogspot.com

Since we've added fourth grade this year, second graders will be in my classroom for Language Arts and Math in the mornings, and will report to Mrs. Moerbe's room after lunch.

Reading requirements for trophies will remain the same. Second graders need to read 100 books at or above grade level. Third graders read 100 books at or above grade level including 6 chapter books. Fourth graders read 100 books at or above grade level including 6 chapter books worth 2.0 points or more.

Again, I am thrilled to be your child’s teacher. Do not hesitate to call with any concerns.

May 3 Parent Letter

Parents,

I am having some language issues with some of the boys. If your child could be one of these, please stress the importance of not using foul language at school. This includes Spanish curse words. Just because it is Spanish, doesn’t make it OK to say at school. I discussed this in detail with the class on Friday and informed them of the consequences of continued crude language. It is not funny, and I am not amused. Zero tolerance. I will write a Discipline Report and the student will not be allowed to go on any end of year trips. I also heard this language at our field trip. This is not appropriate for our school.

Wednesday is Cinco de Mayo, and I am planning some special activities for this day. If you happen to have any Mexican items that would be appropriate for a Mexican show and tell, we will make time for the students to show (and tell about them.) We will also sing Amazing Grace in chapel for the other students in Spanish. We haven’t practiced this in a while, so I’ll send a copy home tonight and maybe you could help a bit with that tonight and tomorrow night.

Our testing schedule will be the normal one: Science on Thursday, Reading and Spelling on Friday.

If you signed up to do the Poetry Reading Contest, expect a note tomorrow at the latest confirming the date of the contest. I have judges lined up and need to get approval on the date from Mrs. Moerbe.

Progress reports will come home Wednesday. Look for those and remember to return the bottom portion the next day.

April 19 Parent Letter

Parents,

The big event of this week is Friday’s Bar-b-que. If you didn’t bring your potatoes/mayo/beans today, please try to have them tomorrow. I have a sign up sheet in my room for you to volunteer a few hours of your time to help on Friday. I got most of the ticket stubs and money on Friday, but if you still have tickets and/or money, please send that tomorrow. We need to know how many tickets were sold so we can buy chicken and plates.

This is parent-teacher conference week. We will discuss your child’s CAT test scores. Check Friday’s note for a reminder of your scheduled time.

Please be sure to return your child’s school pictures or money this week.

Second grade parents: We will begin multiplying by 4 this week. Please keep up with the flash card practice, because your child will fall behind quickly if they aren’t mastering the fact families as we cover them.

April 12 Parent Letter

Parents,

Today begins the sixth and final grading period of the year. Let’s not fade out at the end, keep up the hard work for a few more weeks! Report cards will go home Wednesday. If your child hasn’t made their reading trophy yet, I will attach a note to their reading record so you know what they still need to do.

There will be several sign up sheets in the classroom this week (or out at the pick-up line.) You need to sign up to bring something for the bar-b-que. (Our class can choose from potatoes, Mayonnaise, or pinto beans.) Also, conferences will be held immediately after school this week, and with more extended times next week. I’ll try to accommodate your schedule. Your child’s CAT test will be discussed at this conference.

This week we return to the regular schedule. Homework will be the usual. Science Test will be on Thursday, and a very short Health quiz on Thursday as well.

Second graders need to continue studying their flash cards for multiplying by 3. We begin dividing by three this week, and they just cannot do that work if they don’t know the multiplying by 3 facts. Flash cards and memorizing these facts are a must.

DON’T FORGET TO SELL THOSE BAR-B-QUE TICKETS! Money is due this Friday.

Alice Dale has found a site that she thinks is good for practicing various school skills. I haven’t checked it out yet, but wanted to pass it along to you to look at if you wanted.

Sorry I posted everything so late...The book swap has been postponed due to a funeral that day. Feel free to continue sending books and I'll hang on to them. Dress up day will be on the day of the book swap, so don't dress up on Friday.

March 29 Parent Letter

Parents,

Welcome to week 6 of 7 in this grading period. Since we have completed our Reading/Spelling/Language requirements for this grading period, we’ll have a short break with those things. Science will resume this week, with the assessment on Thursday as usual. The study sheet will be forthcoming.

Next week, following Easter break, we will be taking our CAT tests. In preparation for this, expect at least one special math sheet home this week. The students need to practice rewriting a problem written like this : 35 + 42 = _____

They will rewrite the problem:
35
+42 (Can't get the spacing right, but you know what I mean)

and then solve as usual. This alwayscauses a problem because they don’t want to take the time to rewrite on their test booklet or scratch paper and do the math in their head which generally produces a wrong answer.
HINT for second grade parents: practice 5 x 4

There will be no writing story this week. Our memory verse will be recited on Wednesday.

School is dismissed at 2:00 on Thursday, no school on Friday or Monday. I encourage you to worship on Maundy Thursday, Good Friday and Easter. If you have an interest, both St. Paul Bishop and St. Paul Kingsville would love to have you worship with them on these most holy of days. Feel free to check with me about worship times.

I pray you have a safe, happy and blessed Easter.

Lesson 23 Science Vocabulary

Wash Away Waves (Erosion)

1. It takes energy to make anything move.

2. When moving water shifts materials, it is called erosion.

3. Even though it is a natural force, it is possible to stop erosion.

4. Soil erosion is a major problem worldwide.

5. Barriers along lake shores can help absorb or divert wave energy.

6. The energy of moving water can be absorbed.

7. If soil erosion were not controlled, there could be food shortages because plants need soil.

8. Erosion takes place along the ocean’s shore, on the edge of rivers, and along streams.

9. When you placed your hand in front of the sand, it modeled a barrier.

10. Planting grass might help control erosion.

March 22 Parent Letter

March 22, 2010

Parents,

Welcome back from Spring Break. I hope you all had a fun and relaxing week. Now, back to work!

This is our last week for Spelling and Reading. Please spend a lot of time studying and reviewing this week’s story so your student can have a great last test. One change this week: NO SCIENCE OR SCIENCE TEST this week. We will resume with the next lesson next week. We will be having Health each day this week.

We will do last week’s memory verse on Wednesday and this week’s on Friday to get caught up. Remember to prepare TWO memory verses this week, Wednesday and Friday.

Our field trip is on Friday, and I will send home driving assignments later in the week. Almost all of you signed up to drive, so Mrs. Moerbe’s class will be combined with our students.

Remember that picture day is TOMORROW. If you want a class picture, payment for that must be turned in by the time of pictures.

Again, welcome back!

Fifth Six Weeks Memory Verse #4 & #5

For Wednesday:

Thanks be to God! He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. 1 Corinthians 15:57

For Friday:

[Jesus said,] “I am the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last, the Beginning and the End.” Revelation 22:13

March 8 Parent Letter

Parents,

This is Lutheran School Week, and we will be doing a lot of special things. You got a note on Friday listing our special days, and another reminding you of what you signed up to bring Tuesday for snacks. Here’s a quick reminder:

Monday: Red Day 2 Dozen Cookies: Margarett Gattis
Tuesday: Career Day Alice Dale
Wednesday: School Shirt Day Noemi Schubert
Thursday: Pajama Day Julie Guerra
Friday: Crazy Day Margaret Kelly
10 pk. Juice boxes: Yvonne Hyland Nova Ordner
Terry Valentine
3 liter Root Beer: Lizz Gattis

Although our work load will be lessened this week due to our special activities, we will still have spelling, reading and science tests. Science test will be back to the regular day of Thursday.

As far as the AR Reading Challenge, our class read 212…yes 2-1-2 … books last week! These kids are amazing! Final results will be posted on Thursday, I believe. No matter where they end up placing, I am so, so, very proud of the effort these kids put into this contest. A huge thank you to you parents for encouraging them to read at home.

Look for progress reports to go home on Wednesday.

Next week is Spring Break. No matter what your plans, I pray you have a fun and relaxing week off.

March 1 Parent Letter

Parents,

Second grade students need to continue work on their flash cards. If you haven’t gotten them yet, please try to do that this week. We will be starting division this week. They will only fall behind if they aren’t up to speed with multiplication.

Third graders need to practice their 9 families. We added the nine multiplication table last week. They are doing great with their facts, but please continue to practice.

The kids are doing awesome in the AR Reading Contest. Both grades are in third place currently. We passed 178 TESTS last week. These kids are awesome! This is the last week, so let’s really pour it on and try to read a few extra books at home each night. I’m so proud of how great the students are doing. Third graders met their 30 point goal from last week! Great job everyone!!

One change this week: The science assessment will be on WEDNESDAY this week. This is just for this week. Next week we will be return to the Thursday assessment.

Next week is Nation Lutheran Schools Week. Our class will be responsible for snacks on Monday, March 8. I’ll have a sign up sheet in my room to sign up for something to bring. If you haven’t signed up, I’ll assign a snack. I’ll send home the sheet at the end of the week. Thanks for your help with this. It worked out great last year.

Fifth Six Weeks Memory Verse #3

The LORD has taken away your punishment . . . He is mighty to save. 2 Corinthians 5:15

Lesson 21 Science Vocabulary

States of Matter

1. Everything on Earth is made of matter.
2. Matter on Earth comes in three forms.
3. The three forms (states) of matter are solid, liquid, and gas.
4. Matter has both volume and mass.
5. Matter is anything that takes up space and has substance.
6. In this activity, the cotton in the cup didn’t get web when you pushed it under water because air is matter and the trapped air’s volume kept the water out of the cup.
7. Air is a gas.
8. Sugar is a solid.
9. Gasoline is a liquid.
10. Light is not a form of matter.

February 22 Parent Letter

Parents,

We will have no special tests this week. Friday will be our Spelling and Reading Tests, as usual. Science Assessment will be Thursday, as usual.

We are doing great in the AR Reading Challenge. Second grade has slipped to 3rd place, which is still awesome (76 schools reporting!) Each student counts, so keep up the good work. ( 2-3 books at night and 1-2 in class would be great!) Third graders moved up to 3rd place (75 schools reporting!) Way to go. They read a total of 27.7 points, so they earned their pizza and brownies. Pizza and brownies will be on Thursday (for third grade). My goal for 3rd graders is 30 points this week. As a class, we passed 155 tests this week. This was the biggest week yet. Great job students AND parents.

In math, third grade will add 9 as a factor, so start on those 9 multiplication cards. Second graders add 2 as a factor. Second grade parents: Keep working on those 0, 1, and 2 Multiplication Tables. All the work you do now will pay off big time later, I promise.

Continue to read through your child’s part for our Lutheran School Week play. The more they practice at home, the better our practices at school will be.

I’m still making small changes to the new schedule, but so far I’m pleased with how it’s going.

Scroll down past the study sheets for pictures from the dentist.

Fifth Six Weeks Memory Verse #2

I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you. Isaiah 41:10

Lesson 20 Science Vocabulary

Air Pressure

1. Air pressure is all around us.

2. Air pressure is a kind of force.

3. Air pressure has enough power to move very large objects.

4. Air pressure in the atmosphere affects the weather.

5. Air pressure can keep a basketball from going flat.

6. The following illustrates air pressure: space inside car tires, space inside a basketball, and air used to run commercial tools.

7. The straw didn’t go into the potato when it wasn’t sealed with your thumb because the straw was too weak without the trapped air.

8. The sealed straw was stronger because the trapped air compressed, which supported the straw.

9. This activity proved that air is a form of matter because the straw with the trapped air penetrated the potato.

10. If there was no air pressure human beings could not breathe.
